Core Competencies

The “Core Competencies for Genetic Counsellors in Canada” replace the 2012 Practice-Based Competencies and reflect the evolution of the profession, incorporating current expectations of genetic counselling roles across clinical, laboratory, research, education, and policy roles. Together, these competencies describe the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviours expected of a minimally competent entry-level genetic counsellor in Canada. These Core Competencies are intended to guide training, certification, continuing professional development, and future efforts toward regulation and accreditation.
